Matthew D. Close: Brewmaster

Matthew is a modern renaissance guy. He's a little bit computer nerd, a little bit poet, a lot of beer, and a true family man.

No, Matthew holds no expensive brewing degrees from the Siebel Institute or U.C. Davis. He'd love to go to either place—but with three young children, it's difficult to get away or finance those adventures. For now, Matthew is a self-taught brewer, and he firmly believes that you can rise in the ranks with a lot of hard work at home. Plenty of entrepreneurs in various industries have succeeded this way. All it takes is expertise, courage, and people who believe in you.

That being said, Matthew does have an expensive degree from Stanford University. His coursework there included advanced math and chemistry, though he ultimately opted to major in English, with an emphasis on creative writing. He currently applies very little of his educational background in his day job as Director of Security Engineering for an IT infrastructure company based in St. Louis. (We're talking security as in firewalls. As with brewing, Matthew's always had a knack for tech stuff.)

When he's not working the daily grind, Matthew focuses on building TreeStrike. He is a member of the American Homebrewer's Association (AHA) and the Brewer's Association. Matthew is also an amazing cook, handyman, potter, gardener, and amateur runner (when his knees permit).

Matthew is married to his college sweetheart, Sarah. They have three awesome kids—Emma, Lissa, and Joe—and they live in Southlake, Texas, with their dogs Molly and Max, cats Bear and Boo, and an untold quantity of fish. The Closes are community-centered people and strive to get involved in school activities and volunteer organizations whenever possible.
